10 Tips for your DIY Cake Smash!

1. The cake doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, just made from something that can easily be broken down, tasted or smashed up! Some little ones barely touch it, some dive right in. Giving them a spoon with a taster of a buttercream for example will make a great shot of them interacting!

2. Pick a cute outfit but don’t get too caught up - as long as it's not too distracting from your set colours, even a white babygrow can work wonders!

3. Consider a nappy cover if you’re going for the naked look. Hide the pampers!

4. You don’t have to have a studio, a room in your home with some good natural light and perhaps a neutral background can work and outdoor garden cake smashes also produce some stunning natural results with just a few bday accents, this can be achieved.

5. Be prepared for the mess - if you don’t you can guarantee its going everywhere! Put a mat down or do it on a non carpeted surface.

6. Decorate your set, but you don’t need to go overboard often less is more unless you’re going for a vibrant and busy theme! Some balloons, bunting, confetti.. themed hats and props look super cute!

7. Make sure the child isn’t over tired, a well-rested baby is a happy baby! Don’t even attempt to get the smiles if they aren't happy bunnies. Your photos will reflect this.

8. Cake smashes aren’t exactly a natural thing for a child - let's face it, when have we ever encouraged them to eat the icing off the top of a massive sugary looking thing without being in trouble? So they may need some encouragement!

9. Always check for allergies and cake ingredients!

10. Have fun and don’t sweat the small stuff - the shots don’t have to be perfect, it's supposed to be fun. Make memories!
